 DEAR PAWS,

I'VE BEEN RECOMMENDED JOINT SUPPLEMENTS FOR MY DOG WHO IS NOW 12 YEARS OLD.  HE'S A LITTLE STIFF ON RISING IN THE MORNING AND IS FINDING IT HARD TO CLIMB THE FEW STEPS UP FROM THE GARDEN.  I MYSELF HAVE TAKEN CHONDROITIN AND GLUCOSAMINE IN THE PAST. CAN I FEED MY DOG THE SAME SUPPLEMENTS?

Hi Rachel,

You're right in thinking that the staple ingredients of dog (and cat) joint supplements are chondroitin and glucosamine, but having said that, there ARE quite a few variants out there on the commercial market.  We generally stock and recommend veterinary-standard products for a number of reasons; (1) Glucosamine hydrochloride (rather than the cheaper glucosamine suphate) contains more of the active component which helps arrest arthritic changes within the joint and less salt (2) Levels of purity of some product vary considerably... we should be sure to read the product label before we buy such supplements (3) We've got to be sure to reach appropriate levels of dosing to ensure supplements are to render their full beneficial effects (4) The products we supply have had a proven positive effect on dogs and cats (rather than humans!).  So for the above reasons I'd tend not to use a product from a health shop.  Please let us know if you've any further questions.

Hi, Please can you confirm the process if we wanted to take (our cat) Amber to Ireland with us for Christmas?

Many thanks

Tracey Knight

That's a good question Tracey.  DEFRA is the best authority to contact in relation to queries such as this (http://www.defra.gov.uk/).  They say there are no specific requirements for pet travel from mainland UK to either Northern or Southern Ireland.  They do however recommend a private Health Certificate be issued by your local vet within 7-10days of travel.  This certificate verifies that your animal is in the best of health, is fit to travel, is registered with a vet & is receiving regular attention from a veterinarian...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Dear Vet,

Our youngest cat, Herbert, who is registered with you at Glenthorne Road seems to have developed a problem over the last 2 or 3 weeks.  He has been weeing on the bed and the furniture.  Last week there seemed to be a tiny bit of red in his urine but this seems to have cleared up now, so I don't know if he has an infection of some sort.  Is there anything we can do to stop him weeing where he shouldn't, he still uses his tray but just now and then decides not to, we do keep it clean and we use litter deoderant.

Graham,

Quite a number of things can be going on here and you are right to highlight a urinary tract infection (most commonly cystitis) as a possibility.  Quite often the conditions causing what is sometimes refered to as 'red water' (blood in the urine) are multifactorial in that there can be multiple contributing factors.  We cannot truely ascertain whats happening internally with Herbert without firstly taking a full history then running a few diagnostic tests (most commonly blood and urinar tests).  He, being a neutered male cat, is unfortunately in the highter-risk category for more serious complications to arise, so best we have a look at him.
